Ship emissions in the Arctic

Shipping in the Arctic has been increasing steadily and is expected to grow rapidly in the near future. Since 2016 I work with the Clean Arctic Alliance, an international coalition of NGO’s, aiming to ban Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) in the Arctic. HFO leads to emissions of Black Carbon which causes accelerated melting of ice. An additional risk is the potential loss of fuel in the Arctic Ocean, where HFO will hardly degrade. A spill will be almost impossible to clean up.
